Historical NoteReturn to Top

The departments which became the College of Engineering at Washington State University were in place when the school opened in 1892, with the first graduates in 1897. In 1946, a reorganization established the Washington State Insitute of Technology as the entity which included the academic departments as the College of Engineering, the School of Mines, the Division of Industrial Research and the Division of Industrial Service. The Instutute was again reorganized in July 1966 into a College of Engineering with academic departments, a Research Division and a Technical Extension Service. In June of 1969 the Mining Engineering Department was absorbed into the Materials Science and Engineering Department. The Office of the Dean in 1981 consisted of the Dean of Engineering who oversaw all the College activities, the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies, Associate Dean for Instruction, Assistant Dean for Facilities and Planning, and Assistant Dean for Extension.

Arrangement

The records of the College of Engineering, Office of the Dean, are arranged into three series: Office Files, 1945-1982; Notes, 1970-1982; Reports, 1968-1974.

The first series, Office Files, 1945-1982, is divided into two subseries: Subject Files, 1945-1982; and Outgoing Correspondence and Memos, 1973-1979. The first subseries is an alphabetical subject file; most of which is dated after April 1970, when Carl W. Hall became dean. It consists of incoming correspondence, reports, memoranda, minutes, copies of speeches and newspaper clippings. Original file order and names have been retained when possible. A small group of loose material not fitting into the established filing system has been placed in a folder labelled "Unfiled Material". The second subseries, Outgoing Correspondence and Memoranda, 1973-1979, is arranged chronologically and consists of copies of letters and memoranda primarily generated by Dean Hall, with some by Associate Dean Donald Bender.

The second series, Notes, 1970-1982, consists of Dean Hall's notes and notebooks There are two chronological subseries: the first dated January 1978 through February 1982 appears to reflect telephone conversations. The second subseries, March 1970 through December 1971 and April 1978 through January 1982, is labeled Ideas and Meetings and contains notes taken at meetings. The notebooks of September 1978 contain a log of Dean Hall's travels to the Peoples Republic of China.

The third series consists of alphabetically arranged reports, 1968-1974, concerning the College of Engineering as prepared by the Office of the Dean.
