Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Long term history professor at the University of Idaho, Fred Herbert Winkler was born in New Orleans on December 23, 1923. He received his B.A. and M.A. from the University of Florida in 1947 and 1948 respectively. He was granted a Ph.D. degree from Northwestern in 1957; his dissertation was entitled "The United States and the world disarmament conference, 1926-1935."

From 1943 to 1946 he served in the Armed Forces in France, Germany and Italy. After completing his M.A. he accepted employment as an instructor in the history department at Denison University, Granville, Ohio from 1948 to 1950. He was at the University of North Dakota, in Grand Forks from 1953 to 1955 before coming to the University of Idaho as an instructor in the combined History and Political Science Departments in 1955.

Arrangement

The papers of Fred H. Winkler were received over several years and were in no apparent order; therefore, series order was imposed during processing.

The papers were divided into three main groups. The first of these was called Professional papers and consist of lecture outlines and course outlines for classes he taught throughout his career. The classes taught at other universities were placed first, followed by the courses taught at Idaho. Courses with numbers were placed in numerical ordered, followed by an alphabetical arrangement by subject of material not identified by course number. The second part of this first series contains typescripts and reprints of articles by Winkler which are arranged alphabetically by title, typescripts and mimeographed copies of the syllabuses for several courses, and correspondence and memos related to his teaching career.

The second series concerns his education, both undergraduate and graduate, and contains class notes, outlines, and papers for courses he took, plus grades and correspondence from Northwestern University.

The final series of Personal material contains articles about Winkler, and a variety of newspaper and magazine articles on various events of historical significance. Also included are correspondence, maps, military discharge papers, some research notes, his M.A. thesis and Ph.D. dissertation, two scrapbooks of newspaper clippings and two boxes of note cards.

Duplicate material was removed from the collection, published items were sent to subject librarians for review, and material in from three ring binders was placed file folders. In this manner the collection was reduced by one cubic foot.

Acquisition Information

The papers of Fred Herbert Winkler were donated to the University of Idaho Library between December 1987 and June 1989.
