Historical BackgroundReturn to Top
The Lewis and Clark Exposition (also referred to as the Lewis and Clark Centennial and American Pacific Exposition and Oriental Fair) was held in Portland, Oregon in 1905. Its purpose was two-fold, as proposed by the Oregon Historical Society and endorsed by the Oregon legislature: to celebrate the centennial of Lewis and Clark's exploration of the Oregon Country, and to promote commercial interests, such as attracting attention to the state of Oregon for the advancement of manufacturing, the development of material resources, and expansion of trade with the Orient. Moneys were allocated for exhibitions that would show off the arts, industries, and commercial products from the Oregon region. The Exposition was a great success; in fact, it heralded seven years of great economic growth for the region and became the catalyst for an astounding population boom in Portland.
