Historical Note
The Pacific Northwest Regional Newspaper and Periodical Index contains citations to select articles about the Pacific Northwest that appeared in newspapers, periodicals, pamphlets, and books going back as far as the 1850s. The complete card index of over one million subject entries is housed at the University of Washington Special Collections.
The Index has its origins in a card catalog kept by University of Washington librarians as early as 1931. The early index of cards was referred to as the “Local File.” In 1936 the Regional Index was part of the Works Progress Administration Indexing Project, established to index early Washington newspapers such as “West Shore,” “The Washington Historian,” Smalley’s,” select Washington county newspapers, the Seattle Daily Times, and the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. After 1997 new entries were created only online and a small portion of the legacy card file has been converted to digital format. Indexing ceased in 1999.
