Historical NoteReturn to Top

The W.S.U. Agricultural Research Center was established in 1891 under the name Washington State Agricultural Experiment Station. It was formed under the provisions of the Hatch Act of 1887 to diffuse practical agricultural knowledge among the public through the state colleges. Elton Fulmer served as State Chemist from 1899 until his death in 1916. During this period he undertook extensive research in soils, sugar beet processing and consumer product analysis. He drafted the first pure food law of the state which was later adopted by the legislature.
