Historical NoteReturn to Top

Frederick Alexander Cuthbert was born in Essex, Ontario, Canada, the son of a Baptist minister. In 1908, the family moved to Muskegon, Michigan. Cuthbert graduated from the University of Michigan in 1928 with a Master's of Landscape Design, and began teaching at Oregon Agricultural College shortly thereafter.

In 1932, he was hired by the University of Oregon as the landscape architect, collaborating with campus architect Ellis Lawrence on several of the most recognizable open spaces on campus, namely the Memorial Quadrangle and the Women's Quadrangle (both of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places). His work was also instrumental in the eventual design of both the Dads' Gates (also listed on the NRHP) and Johnson Lane Axis. In 1934, Cuthbert founded the Department of Landscape Architecture, and would later become Dean of the School of Architecture and Allied Arts.

Cuthbert designs are found not only on the University of Oregon campus, but in and around Eugene as well. He designed Alton Baker Park and the Eugene Mall in Eugene; Corvallis High School in Corvallis; and the landscape of the State Capitol in Salem. He founded the Pacific Northwest Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects, of which he was a member for over 25 years, serving as its president and chairman of the Board of Fellows.

He retired from his department head position at the university in 1971, and died in 1978.
