Historical Note

Mary Burnette Kirkwood was born in Hillsboro, Oregon December 21, 1904 to Joseph E. and Ella Hoyt Kirkwood. In 1926, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from University of Montana in Missoula, Montana, and four years later a Master of Fine Arts degree from University of Oregon at Eugene. She completed graduate work at both the Royal Art School at Stockholm, Sweden and the College of Art Study Abroad in Paris.

In 1930, she joined the faculty at the University of Idaho, hired as a professor of painting, composition, and history of painting. While at the university she used her skills on several buildings by painting murals including one for the Agricultural Science Building depicting the State's varied types of agriculture and one for the University Library depicting "Truth awakened by knowledge and understanding." After 40 years at the university, she retired in 1970.

Kirkwood was a member of the Boise Art Association, the Idaho Art Association, the National Art Education Association, the Moscow Fine Arts Club, and was a charter member of the Washington, D.C., National Museum for Women in the Arts. Her work has been displayed throughout the Northwest and is in several private collections.
