Historical NoteReturn to Top

Kyogen, which translates literally into "mad words", is a form of comic theater that originated in Japan. He was created to provide an intermission between Noh acts during a performance--a Noh is a musical performance that portrays Buddhist stories and themes. When combined with a Noh, Kyogen is referred to as Nogaku theater. Kyogen is often compared to the Greek satyr play, which provided comic relief between tragedy performances. Kyogen features slapstick comedy and satire and is accompanied by flute music, drums, and gongs. Dialogue is often emphasized over the musical and dance elements.
