The Willamette University scrapbook collection consists of scrapbooks created by Willamette University faculty, staff and students. Scrapbooks include newspaper clippings, photographs, programs, letters, awards, and souvenirs gathered to document the individual and community life at Willamette University. Included are scrapbooks created for campus residence halls, scrapbooks created by individual students and faculty members, and scrapbooks created to document publicity about the university.

This collection is arranged into four series: I. Faculty scrapbooks; II: Publicity scrapbooks; III: Residential scrapbooks; and IV: Student scrapbooks.

Scrapbooks retain their original form. Scrapbooks are organized in alphabetical order.

Series I: Faculty scrapbooks, 1913-1967Return to Top

This series contains scrapbooks created by Willamette University faculty. Scrapbooks include photographs and memorabilia.

His scrapbook includes portraits given to him by teachers and composers in music, photographs of Dobbs as a child, as an adult playing piano, and of his family members. 2	Reverend James T. Matthews scrapbook Matthews, James T., 1864-1942 James T. Matthews (1893-1942) was a mathematics professor and dean at Willamette University. This scrapbook focuses on the Willamette University summer school held in Joseph, Oregon.	1913-1914

Publicity scrapbooks contain newspaper clippings featuring or mentioning Willamette University. These clippings were compiled by University staff to document the publicity of the year(s). The Office of Communications collection also contains compilations of more recent newspaper and magazine publicity.

Series III: Residential life scrapbooks, 1956-1975Return to Top

This series contains scrapbooks created by students living in campus residence halls. Halls represented in these scrapbooks include Baxter, Doney, Lausanne, and York Halls. The majority of the scrapbooks include photographs, event programs, and lists of committee members.

		Subseries A: Baxter Hall Baxter Hall was built in 1947. It is named for Bishop Bruce Baxter who was Willamette University President from 1934 to 1940. Baxter Hall initially comprised four wings for fraternity organizations and a central area for independent men.	1958-1963

		Subseries C: Lausanne Hall Lausanne Hall was built in 1920. It replaced the Women's Dormitory that had been the home of Willamette University's first teacher, Chloe Clarke Willson. That dormitory was closed in 1915, and construction for the new Lausanne Hall began in 1919. Between July 1943 and October 1945, Lausanne became the home of the V-12 College Navy Training Program at Willamette.	1956-1960

Series IV: Student scrapbooks, 1894-1993Return to Top

This series contains scrapbooks created by students to document their time at Willamette University. Largely covering the early half of the twentieth century, students' scrapbooks included programs, letters, souvenirs, photographs, and newspaper clippings. Programs include dances and dinners put on by campus fraternities, sororities, and residential organizations. Letters are from loved ones on-campus and at home. Collected souvenirs include dried flowers, pencils, name-cards, and in the case of Barbara Crookham Euler, tea bags and wedding cake.

22		Elsie L. Allen class of 1930 Elsie Allen graduated in 1930 with a degree in Physical Education. She was a member of the Archery club, Honor Code Committee, the YWCA, was Lausanne Hall Vice President, and played on the women's basketball team for three years. After graduating from Willamette, she taught Physical Education in Milton Freewater.	1927-1931
23		Elizabeth Atkinson class of 1931 Elizabeth Atkinson graduated in 1931 with a degree in Economics. She was a member of the Delta Phi sorority, the Y.W.C.A, the Riding club, Archery club, and a reporter for the Collegian. After graduating from Willamette, she worked for a contracting firm in San Francisco.	1927-1931
24		Marion Barnes class of 1920 Marian Barnes was a member of the class of 1920. She served as secretary of her freshman class.	1916-1920
25		Esther R. Bauman class of 1926 Esther Bauman graduated in 1926 with a degree in History. She was a member of the Delta Phi sorority, the Inter-Sorority Council, and the Philodosian literary society.	1922-1926
26		Ruth Bedford - Memory book of College Life Ruth Bedford graduated in 1923 with a degree in French. She was a member of the Chrestomathean society, participated in the Junior play and Freshman Glee, and was frequently the pianist at campus events. She later became a pianist in Salem.	1919-1923

53	1	Helen Borchardt class of 1927 Helen Borchardt graduated from Willamette University in 1927 with a degree in history. She was a member of the ladies glee club. She married Marvin Trindle in 1928. She died in Salem in 1978.	1923-1931
27		Grace Brainerd class of 1923 Grace Brainerd graduated in 1923 with a degree in Mathematics. She was a member of the Delta Phi sorority, the Philodosian literary society, was Maid to the May Queen, and Associate Editor of the Wallulah.	1919-1922
28		Elizabeth J. Briggs class of 1919 Elizabeth Briggs graduated in 1919 with a degree in History. She was a member of the Owyhee Club, the Adelante society, and the Lausanne Hall Club. She was also a senior scholar. She later taught mathematics and earned her Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Oregon.	1916-1920
29		Warren William Herman Clark class of 1914 W. W. Herman Clark graduated in 1914 with a degree in Chemistry. He was Glee Club president, a member of the Prohibition association, the Websterian literary society, the Y.M.C.A, President of the Willamette Institute of Scientific Research and manager and editor of the University Song Book. Clark studied organic chemistry at the University of Oregon, taught Chemistry at Salem High School, and joined the faculty at Willamette in 1923.	1910-1915

32		Barbara Crookham Euler scrapbook Barbara Crookham Euler, class of 1938, was a member of the Wallulah, the Collegian, and Delta Phi sorority. In 1936, Euler edited the university's student handbook, commonly referred to as the 'Rook Bible.' She later became a teacher and served in the air Women's Army Corps during World War II.	1934-1938
		Josephine Heald (Jo Simpson) scrapbook Josephine A. Heald, class of 1959, served as student-body vice president, Collegian campus editor and was a member of the Delta Gamma sorority. She married Robert Simpson on the day of her graduation from Willamette University in 1959 and was best known as Jo Simpson. Simpson spent much of her life volunteering for parent and student organizations as well as for Republican political campaigns. These commitments culminated in her successful run for the State House of Representatives during the 1979-1980 legislative session. This scrapbook is part of the Josephine "Jo" Simpson papers.	1955-1959

34		Harry Earl McEwen class of 1922 Harry Earl McEwen graduated in 1922 with degrees in Philosophy, History and English. He was a member for the Epicurean Club, the Chrestophilian Literary society, and was part of the Junior Play.	1919-1923
35		Sybil McClure class of 1921 Sybil McClure, class of 1921, majored in French and Spanish. She was a member of the Chrestomathean literary society and the Lausanne Hall Club. McClure and Millard Doughton married circa 1921.	1918-1920
36		Esther Parounagian (Barnes) class of 1923 Esther Parounagian graduated in 1923 with a degree in Biology. She was a member of the Philodosian literary society, the Y.W.C.A, the Beta Chi sorority, and was the May Queen. She married Ralph Barnes in 1924. Ralph was a foreign correspondent from 1926 to 1940.	1919-1937
37		Eva Parrett class of 1920 Eva Parrett graduated in 1920 with a degree in English and History. She was a member of the Philodosian Literary Society, the Lausanne Hall Club, and the Beta Chi sorority. She was also the Editor of the Collegian.	1917-1920
38		Edna Price scrapbook Edna Price was an 1896 graduate of Willamette University. Her fiancé, Corporal Harry (Hal) Glen Hibbard, a student of the Willamette School of Oratory, died of typhoid fever in Manila on December 9, 1898, while serving with the Second Oregon Volunteer Infantry in the Spanish-American War. He was granted a posthumous degree in 1899. After graduating, Price did secretarial work until her marriage in 1903 to Reverend Samuel H. Jones, an Irish Presbyterian minister. They lived in Jacksonville and Salem, Oregon, as well as Nevada and Texas. The couple had three children, two of whom died in childhood. Their son, Malcolm, attended Willamette from 1932 to 1938 and received both A.B. and L.L.B. degrees. Price's grandson, Malcolm Jones, Jr., likewise attended Willamette in the late 1950's. Price passed away at the age of 92 on May 3, 1970. The Edna Price scrapbook consists of photographs, university memorabilia, and newspaper clippings dating from 1896 to 1899. The majority of the clippings document the Spanish-American War and more specifically Second Oregon Volunteer Infantry regiment. A clipping from 1959 shows Price's son and grandson visiting Willamette's campus for Parents' Weekend. Also included is a letter from a fellow classmate to Price, dated 1931, inquiring as to the whereabouts of other class alumni and suggesting a reunion. 50		Winifred St. Claire Rogers scrapbook Winifred St. Claire Rogers graduated in 1923. She was a member of the Beta Chi sorority as well as the Philodosian society.
