Biographical NoteReturn to Top
James Wehn, 1882-1973, was a pioneer sculptor of the Pacific Northwest. He moved with his family to Seattle, Washington Territory, in February 1889. From 1905 until 1973 he worked from his studio in Seattle where he created many famous works including "Chief Seattle" (the first statue erected by the city, in 1912), the official Seattle City Seal (1936), and other bronze statues and plaques of early Northwest pioneers and explorers. A collection of James Wehn's sculptures, numbering more than 200 pieces, is on permanent display in the museum of the Washington State Historical Society.
In 1919, Wehn founded the Department of Sculpture at the University of Washington and taught there for five years.
