Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Edward S. Curtis (1858-1952) was a Seattle-based photographer noted for his portraits of Native Americans. His twenty volume The North American Indian, published between 1907 and 1930, is considered his magnum opus, and in the course of creating that he took over 40,000 photographs of more than 80 tribes.

White Man Runs Him, the subject of the image, was one of several Crow warriors who served as scouts for Custer at the Little Bighorn.

The collection is just one item, a copperplate photogravure on Japanese vellum of a 1908 Edward S. Curtis photograph of White Man Runs Him. It is branded "From copyright photograph 1908 by E.S. Curtis." The image is 7"x4.5", on 12"x9" paper. The image is listed in The North American, large folio edition volume 3, facing page 48.
