Historical Note

Jungle Garden Press was started by Marie C. Dern in Berkeley, California, in 1974. Dern began Jungle Garden Press in the basement of her house. She has printed and published more than 40 books, including her own writing, as well as that by others. Her books are printed letterpress and are bound by hand. Books from Jungle Garden Press are found in many collections including the New York Public Library, Mills College Library, the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts, and the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

Marie Dern was born in Salt Lake City, Utah. She attended the University of California, Berkeley, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Berkeley. In 1986 she received a Master of Arts degree in Book Arts from Mills College.
