Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Hortense Redd (june 6, 1897- Julu 15, 1990) was born to James Monroe Redd and Lucinda Pace Redd in a log cabin, 150 miles away from the nearest doctor, in the pioneer village of Bluff, Utah. Her father, as a 16 year old youth, served as a scout in helping guide the small band of colonizers as they crossed the Colorado River in a place now known as "The Hole In The Rock".

In 1905 her family moved to nearby Monticello, and it was there that her parents lived and died.

In an effort to obtain an education she went to Logan, Utah to attend the Agricultural College as a "prep" student. She spent her sophomore year at Ann Arbor, Michigan and her third year at the LDS High School in Salt Lake. She graduated from the University of Utah in 1922, and received additional schooling at the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Chicago. She taught in several places, but principally at the Granite High School in Salt Lake City, where she taught world history from 1922-43. In 1943 she resigned her teaching position to help in the war effort. She accepted employment with the War Labor Board and served there until the war ended

She married William O. Erickson in the Salt Lake LDS Temple, June 18, 1954. Mr. Erickson was a prominent business and churchman in Taft, California. He served for many years as Mayor and on the City Council, and was an owner in a mortuary business. He also served as Patriarch in the Bakersfield Stake. While they lived in California they were ordinance workers in the Los Angeles Temple, and continued their temple work in the Salt Lake Temple on coming to Salt Lake.
