Biographical Note
Landscape architect Roberta Wightman (b. 1912) moved to Seattle in 1944 to work with Edwin Grohs at University of Washington Arboretum. Prior to moving west, she worked as a landscape architect in Springfield, Illinois (1938-1944). Wightman was born and raised in Chicago by physician parents. She took courses at Oberlin College in Ohio, Middlebury College in Vermont, and Cambridge University in England; she received a bachelor's degree in Landscape Architecture from University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana in 1938.
Wightman worked for Edwin Grohs and Associates in Seattle from 1945-1948 before starting her own landscape architecture business. Among her projects, Wightman was the landscape consultant for Northwest Hospital in Seattle for over 30 years, and designed the landscaping for the original construction in 1959-1960 and a later expansion in 1980.
Roberta Wightman retired in 2000.
