Historical Note

In November 1971, twenty to thirty persons involved in the grape industry met in Prosser to form an organization that would foster the interests of Washington grape producers. This group selected a constitutional committee and a nominations committee. The constitutional committee drafted a document and bylaws patterned after the Washington State Horticulture Association constitution. In December 1971, the group adopted the proposed constitution and elected a slate of officers. Warren Tomlinson was elected the Society's first president. The stated purpose of the organization is "the overall advancement of the grape industry in the State of Washington." During its first year, the Society's membership rose to about 500, which included persons from all aspects of the grape industry. The Society's major projects are the annual "grape school" (used to inform and educate interested persons of the advances in the industry), the "Proceedings" (an annual publication), and funding research on topics of interest to the grape industry.

Content Description

The Washington State Grape Society records were created by two separate accessions, which create the two series. The first series encompasses items received in the initial accession from 1977, and includes minutes, correspondence, and business records of the organization from 1971 to 1976. The minutes consist of the records of monthly meetings from the Society's organization from December 1971 through December 1975. Membership lists for 1971-72 and 1972-73 are included in the collection. The correspondence series comprises about half of the material in Part 1 of the collection and includes both incoming and outgoing material. The bulk of the correspondence consists of membership material and orders for the annual proceedings. Also included in the correspondence is material dealing with the Society's fight to control the use of the herbicide 2,4-D. The financial records, which are also nearly half of Part 1 of the collection, consist primarily of cancelled checks, receipts, and bills for the period 1972-76. The collection also contains a newspaper clipping file concerning the grape school, the 2,4-D controversy, and other Society functions. Most clippings, however, do not identify the newspaper or date.

The second series contains those records received in 1991, and includes several miscellaneous correspondence files for the period 1978 to 1989. Other files contain receipt books (1976-86), cancelled checks (1980-85), bank statements four accounts, board of directors minutes (1981-82), and other topical files. The collection also includes activity notebooks, check registers from 1971 to 1980, copies of "Grapevine Notes," "On the Vine," and the Society's annual "Proceedings" from 1973 to 1986.
