Department of Animal Sciences Records, 1921-1982

The first two series of the Records of the Department of Animal Sciences retain their received order. The photographs and negatives were in no order when received, although some were in envelopes; these were kept together and the entire collection was arranged by broad subject. The slides, which were in boxes, were kept together.

The first series contains research material and student papers. The research material is in the received order and contains mostly information on dairy cattle. Items in the folders include typed reports, published articles by University of Idaho faculty, and handwritten notes; original folder headings were preserved. The student papers appear to have been reports on special projects in animal husbandry courses; these are arranged alphabetically by last name of the student.

The first four folders in the second series, Registration, Insurance, etc., were in unlabeled envelopes. The material was transferred to file folders and the headings reflect the nature of the majority of material in the folder. Included in these folders are insurance policies, correspondence and photographs. The remainder of the material consists of both Jersey bull and cow registrations. Attached to the cow registrations are pedigrees and breeding records, insurance policies, and lactation certificates. These registrations are in folders by the first two names of the animal, then arranged in the folder by the third name (e.g. Idaho Royal Babs, Idaho Royal Cora, etc.) The folders are in chronological order.

The majority of the photographs in series three were unidentified and undated. They are arranged in broad categories. Included are dairy and beef cattle, silage storage, and staff of the Animal Sciences Department. The 35mm slides all concern poultry production and are in slide pages each holding 20 slides.

The research material originally contained many federal documents, publications of extension services of other states, and publications of the University of Idaho Agricultural Extension. The University of Idaho documents were removed and checked against the holdings in Special Collections, the remaining non University of Idaho material was removed and sent to the gifts librarian for evaluation. Computer generated herd production records were also removed. This reduced the records by 6 cubic feet.
