- Robert L. Bacon, Ph.D. was a great advocate of graduate and continuing medical education. This collection contains applications, bulletins, correspondence, and brochures showing the variety of programs available. Also included are medical illustrations, radiographs, x-rays, and research presentation materials accessioned in March of 2014.

Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Robert L. Bacon, Ph.D. (1918-2009) received a B.S. from Hamilton College in Clinton N.Y. in 1940 and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Zoology from Yale in 1944. Bacon taught anatomy at Stanford University in California prior to his tenure at the University of Oregon Medical School. He then served at the medical school as professor of cell biology and anatomy at the School of Medicine (1955-1982). A firm believer in a well-rounded education, he mentored the Robert L. Bacon Endowment which endeavored to expose medical students to studies outside their regular curriculum. Dr. Bacon also conducted research on embryology and cancer. Among his non-medical passions were environmentalism and wine making. He was a key player in lobbying for passage of the Oregon Beach Bill of 1967, despite threats and terrorism. He felt this to be his greatest achievement. He also had great influence on the development of the Oregon Wine Industry. He died after a long illness on January 12, 2009. Honors Winner of student-selected Dr. Allen J. Hill Award for Excellence in Teaching seven times in a twenty- year period.

The collection consists of documents and brochures about graduate education at UOMS from 1963-1965. The second box contains medical illustrations radiographs, x-rays, and research presentation materials accessioned in March of 2014. Included are original drawings by Joel Ito for Robert Bacon and Nelson R. Niles' textbook, Medical Histology: A Text-Atlas with Introductory Pathology as well as illustrations by Robert Bacon, Clarice Ashworth Francone, Bernhard Siegfried Albinus, and Andreas Vesalius.

Acquisition Information
The first donation was given to the Historical Collections & Archives by Robert L. Bacon, Ph.D. on November 11, 1997. The second donation of drawings, x-rays, and radiographs were formerly owned by Dr. Bacon and donated by son, David Bacon, and daughter in law, Jane Bacon, on 9/24/2013.
Future Additions
Materials in boxes 2 and 3 are an accrual to the papers, accessioned in January of 2014 and processed in March of 2014.
