Historical Note

The Washington Poultry Improvement Association was organized in Puyallup, Washington, and its first annual conference was held in 1922. The expressed purposes of the Association are (1) to provide reliable sources of breeding stock, chicks, and hatching eggs through breeding and disease control, (2) to provide supervision and inspection of flocks and hatcheries, (3) to protect against inferior stock, and (4) to promote legislation favorable to the poultry industry. As ex-officio members of the board of directors, the head of Washington State University Poultry Department and the superintendent and the poultry head of Western Washington Experiment Station in Puyallup (now Western Washington Research and Extension Center) insure access to current scientific research.

Administrative Information

Arrangement

The records of the Washington Poultry Improvement Association are arranged in two series.

The first series (1937-1975), comprised mostly of correspondence, concerns the functioning of the organization. Principal correspondants include Western Washington Experiment Station supervisor David F. Allmendinger (1966-1971), former supervisor J.W. Kalkus, Ramsey G. Burdett, DVM, producer James H. Knowles (1948-1952), and poultry inspectors Harold A. James and S.S. Gossman. Also included in this series are financial records, transportation material, minutes and programs for state and national conferences, and inspector and laboratory records.

The second series (1922-1975) deals with product improvement and consists of inspectors' work sheets, hatchery and flock inspection field records, and laboratory results. About half of this material is related to the National Turkey Improvement Plan and the National Poultry Improvement Plan.

Acquisition Information

The records of the Washington Poultry Improvement Association were donated by the Association to the Washington State University Libraries in November 1977 through David F. Allmendinger, supervisor (77-67).
