Summary: Almeron Newman (1875-1964) was a photographer in Trinidad, Colorado, and came to Salt Lake City in 1909 for the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) convention in August of that year. The Almeron Newman photograph collection consists of images of firemen, police, GAR vertans, women's groups, children, views of Salt Lake City, and US Army units at Fort Douglas.

Almeron Newman was born on June 20, 1875 in Porland, Michigan to Emma Lorena Chase and Frederick Newton Newman. He graduated from Portland High School in 1893. Almeron Newman married Ida May Macomber (1875-1952). After graduation, Newman studied photography. He was known for his panorama photographs and for photographing the Ndendahe Apache leader Geronimo. In 1909, Newman came to Salt Lake City, Utah, to attend the Grand Army of the Republic convention in August of that year to photograph the event, Civil War veterans, and Salt Lake City. While in Salt Lake City he used his panorama camera to photograph firemen, police, GAR veterans, women's groups, children, views of Salt Lake City, and United States Army units at Fort Douglas. Newman served as director of photography for the United States government at Lowery Field in Denver, Colorado, during World War II. Almeron Newman died on April 7, 1964 in Trinidad, Colorado.

Acquisition Information

The Almeron Newman photograph collection consists of 1 box containing 17 black-and-white photogrpahs and panoramas taken by Newman during a 1909 visit to Salt Lake City, Utah to document the Grand Army of the Republic convention. These photographs were purchased by the University of Utah obtained from negatives in the collections of the A. Roy Mitchell Museum of Western Art, Trinidad, Colorado. The prints were made by Roach Studios in Denver, Colorado. One of the photographs is an original donated to by Sherman Taylor. This collection has been fully digitized and may be viewed on the Marriott Library Digital Library.
