Historical NoteReturn to Top
Arthur Mason (March 14, 1876-1955), a children's book author, was born in Strangford, Ireland. He did not begin to write until the age of 44. First he was a sailor, gaining first command by the age of 25. He became a citizen of the United States in 1899. He mined for gold in Australia, Alaska, and the western United States, and was a marine superintendent during World War I. Mary Frank Mason (1888-1966), his wife, was an author of children's stories and a librarian.
