Scope and Content: Tape recorded interview conducted by Adina Russak on 4 Aug 1983, transcript, curriculum vitae (no date)
Harry Ash was on the survey committee to study the need for a Seattle Jewish Community Center. He discusses community reaction, the results of the survey, and the decisions ultimately reached. He traces development of the Jewish Community Center to the present. He talks about Herzl, the succession of rabbis there and the conflict of splinter groups: Beth Am, Beth Shalom, and Ner Tamid. He discusses the Anti-Defamation League and the issue of discrimination in the Seattle Symphony Orchestra as well as touching on the State Fair Employment Act, Washington Athletic Club, and Sand Point Country Club. He also relates his activities in helping to organize the Jewish Boy Scout Troup No. 46 (1934) and in helping with B'nai B'rith youth groups (1935-1955). Among other subjects mentioned are Hillel, Jewish Welfare Board, and Jewish Family Service. He also discusses the development of Jewish educational institutions in the city and the impact of the "Dr. Ruth Levy Report", institutions formal and informal that were forerunners of the community center, the YMHA, the Menorah Society, the Herzl Junior Guild, Temple Center and "Sam Goldsmith's Drug Store", the development of the Jewish Community Center through "The Crisis" in 1982, and German resettlement.
