Joseph P. Surace was active in masonic circles in the states of Washington and Utah over the span of several years. He served honorably in the U.S. Marine Corps. An avid runner, Joseph participated in three Boston marathons. In 1982 he received a B. S. in secondary education from the University of Nevada in Las Vegas.

The Joseph P. Surace papers (1831-2002) are comprised of periodical articles, newspaper clippings, book reviews, proceedings of masonic grand lodges and masonic society publications. The collection focuses upon the history of Freemasonry in the United States, Canada and several European countries. Articles pertaining to masonic historical research and obituaries of prominent masons can be found in box 1. Box 2 contains information concerning the origins of Freemasonry, its relationship with religion, masonic law, and masonic attitudes towards Jews. Materials related to the history of Freemasonry in the United States with particular emphasis upon the state of Utah are stored in box 3. Box 4 possesses a variety of sources concentrating upon the issues of the legitimacy and the recognition of African-American lodges and the history of African-American Freemasonry. Discussions of and reports about the history of the anti-masonic movement and its activities can be viewed in box 5. Boxes 6, 7 and 8 house excerpts from masonic publications which detail the historical development of Freemasonry in Canada, Europe and throughout the world.
