Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Harry Fabbe was born, 1899, Gustaf Harry Fabianson in Stockholm. He emigrated to the United States in 1915 on the advice of his father, who was in Pennsylvania at the time. While working at various jobs and during five years as a mining engineer at Kennicott mines in Alaska, Fabbe wrote articles and poems for publication in Swedish-American newspapers and magazines, such as "Svenska Socialisten," "Verdandi," and "Svenska Journalen." Being a valued contributor to "Svenska Journalen" ("Svenska Posten" after 1935) in Seattle, in 1927 Fabbe was offered the editorship. He accepted and maintained this position for 46 years, with only short interuptions. During the 1930s Fabbe participated in a film-making expedition with the brothers John and Sven Utterstrom. This gave him material for many articles which Fabbe sold to Swedish-American and Swedish publications. He also published a book in Sweden, "I slagbjornens spar." Although he returned to Sweden only twice in the 55 years spent in the United States, Fabbe maintained his Swedish through his writing activity and contact with Swedes in Seattle and the Pacific Northwest. He died December 8, 1973.

Series 5: Viking Athletic Club, 1928-1931Return to Top
The Viking Athletic Club was a predominately Swedish-American Athletic organization based in Seattle in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Soccer was the biggest sport although there were also grand summer gatherings featuring all kinds of sports and activities. The Club was only one of many activities Fabbe became involved in while in Seattle. Although the main activities of the Club are included, such as results of soccer games and future schedules, types of sports equipment and the like, one story of more consequence embedded within the correspondence stands out: On January 18, 1931, during a soccer game, Nels Haglund, a Viking Sports Club player, was apparently hit very hard by the goal keeper on the opposing team. While in this groggy state, he exchanged some harsh words with a referee who never saw the punch and was thrown out of the game. This small incident escalated until the whole team was suspended and fined. Fabbe sent off numerous letters to various officials asking for the case to be reviewed, and defending Haglund's and the Club's position. In fact, the case remained unresolved as of the date of the last item in the accession (1931).
The accession was donated by Fabbe's daughter, Ingrid Fabianson of Friday Harbor, in 1989.
Processing was completed in 1993.
