Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Charles W. Bodemer was born in Denison, Iowa, in 1927. He received a B.A. in zoology from Pomona College, and a Ph.D. in anatomy from Cornell University. While a member of the U.S. Marine Corps from 1944-1947, he was stationed in Japan, China, and the South Pacific.
Bodemer joined the faculty of the University of Washington in 1956. He began his career in the Department of Anatomy. In 1963 he became assistant dean of medicine, and in 1965 he became an associate dean. Bodemer's greatest contribution to the University of Washington came from his work with the UW School of Medicine's Department of Biomedical History, which he founded in 1967 and chaired until his death in 1985. He was considered a very fine lecturer and teacher, and was highly regarded as a speaker on the history of medicine. He was also a prolific writer, publishing over 50 books and many articles and papers.
Bodemer's academic and research interests ranged from medical history to cultural studies, and included art, music, literature, religion, law, and philosphy. He had a particular interest in the history of medicine in the Northwest region of the United States, and in the history and philosophy of traditional medicine in China. He spent time at Yenching University and studied oriental affairs at Claremont Graduate School. His other medical history interests included 17th- and 18th-century medicine, societal attitudes toward madness, reproductive medicine, and the history of surgery.
Content DescriptionReturn to Top
The papers of Charles W. Bodemer document his wide range of research interests and professional activities. The arrangement of the papers reflects Bodemer's own filing system. The largest series are general correspondence, speeches, writings, and research files. Bodemer organized his correspondence into a few smaller subject areas, including correspondence with professional journals, publishers, and academic and research societies. Other series cover curriculum files for courses on biomedical history taught by Bodemer, conferences, seminars, grants, and photographs and illustrations.
Correspondence files often include other materials related to the correspondent such as brochures, fliers, and directories. Often there are two folders for a given speech, one containing a copy of the text, and the other containing information about the event at which the speech was to be given. Folder titles can reflect either the subject of the speech or the location or event of the speech. The bulk of the writings are manuscripts, which occasionally relate to speeches or lectures given by Bodemer. The writings also include two collected volumes of Bodemer's work from 1980 and 1981. The consultation files cover instances in which Bodemer served as a consultant to other writers or members of the media.
There are three sections of research files. The first contains summaries, notes, and quotations from a variety of authors. The second, and largest, group of research files contains clippings, articles, illustrations, correspondence, photographs, and other materials related to Bodemer's writings and is organized by subject. Bodemer's interest in the history of medicine, especially the history of medicine in the Northwest, is well documented in this series. Many of the documents in the second research files series are photocopies. The third section of research files consists of magazine article clippings and reprints.
The bulk of the photographs series consists of reproductions of illustrations used by Bodemer in his writings. Several folders contain images relating to the history of medicine in the Northwest. There are few original photographs in the series.
