Historical NoteReturn to Top
Washington State initiative campaign supported by such environmental organizations as Washington Environmental Council, Washington Public Interest Research Group, Washington Citizens for Recycling with support also from the League of Women Voters of Washington, the Washington State Labor Council, and the Washington State Democratic Central Committee. Following the filing of the campaign committee's initiative, the State Legislature passed a Hazardous Waste Cleanup Act in October 1987. Both measures appeared on the November 1988 ballot: the more stringent 97, which would raised more funds for cleanup, and the existing law, 97B. Funders of the 97B campaign were large oil companies and other industrial firms; supporters included the Association of Washington Cities, the State Grange, the former director of the State Ecology Department, and retiring U.S. Senator Dan Evans. Initiative 97 passed by a large margin.
See related accession, the Debbie Landon papers, a thesis which gives background information and an overview of the campaign.
