Historical Note

The Department of Residence Living was formed in 1968 by the Washington State University Student Affairs Division. Its purpose focused on programming and living environment matters at dormitories, fraternity and sorority houses, and university apartments, excluding those used for family housing. This office had oversight of residence hall government, social activity, and discipline. It also was a laision with the Housing and Food office of the University. The staff of Residence Living consisted of a central office and the live-in resident directors and advisors who are located in the respective dormitories.

In 1987, the Department changed its name to Residence Life and it was repositioned in the university's organizational scheme, resulting in closer ties to the housing and food service departments, although remaining within Student Affairs division.

Over the first two decades of the office, one employee, George Bettas, was often the key figure in the department, beginning as a head resident in a dormitory, and then as Assistant Director and Director of Residence Living.

Administrative Information

Arrangement

The records consist of memoranda, correspondence, and reports, along with some routine documents, concerning dormitory life at Washington State University. The arrangement is basically informal. The office had portions of the records bound in book fashion, and other records were kept in file folders. The files folders were loosely grouped in an arrangement with similar materials in proximity, although not in the form of series of records in the archival sense.

Also included are various residence hall handbooks and similar documents.

Acquisition Information

Records of the Department of Residence Living were transferred to the University Libraries in 1986 and 1987 (accessions UA86-27, UA87-27, and UA87-28).

Processing Note

The records were processed by Scott Stratton in August, 2000.
