Biographical Note

Prosthodontist Fred Ellis Gulick, D.M.D., F.A.C.D., was born in Denver, Colorado on January 10, 1889. In 1913, Fred married Edith R. Slusher, a woman from Pendleton, Oregon. They gave birth and raised 1 daughter, Virginia, and 2 sons, William and George. Gulick began his training in dentistry at the North Pacific College of Dentistry, located on E 6th Ave and Oregon St in Portland, Oregon in 1915. From 1918-1919, Gulick was commissioned as Captain in the U.S. Army Ordinance Department in Washington, D.C. after finishing post-graduate work in dentistry at Colombia University in New York City as well as in Baltimore and Philadelphia. In 1919-1920, Gulick moved back to Portland and started a dental practice, opening an office in the A. Morgan Building in downtown Portland. Gulick was also very involved with professional dental organizations, including the Oregon Dental Association where he served as president in the early 1920s. In 1930, Gulick formed the Pacific Coast Society of Prosthodontists with Russell Tench and Leslie Eames. The Society now gives annually the Fred E. Gulick Distinguished Life Member Award.
