Historical NoteReturn to Top
The Board of Regents is the central governing board for Washington State University. Members are appointed by the Governor of the State of Washington. The Enabling Act that established the institution implies certain administrative duties for the Regents. In early years of the college, Regents sometimes had a direct role in both management and operation. At other times, the Regents have served more as an oversight and policy board. The University President is the Secretary of the Board, and, for many matters, is the legal delegate of the Board.
Content DescriptionReturn to Top
Minutes of the Washington State University Board of Regents, the earliest from 1891, following normal minute format. The collection consists of four series.
Series one is the minute books.
A shorter second series consist of the supporting documents, chiefly from 1975-1979. This second series derives from several sources, much of it apparently from the offices of the Associated Students of Washington State University. This series was added to the Regents records without regard to provenance.
A third series, added in 2022, consists of six volumes, covering 1955-1961, of personnel transactions. These detail new appointments, departures, leaves, and promotions. Prior to 1955, they had been included in the body of the minutes.
Series four was added starting in 2017, and consists of original signature pages for resolutions passed by the board, plus supporting documentation (often labeled "action items" in more recent years). 1981-1996 appear to be incomplete, and a subject-based index to most of those can be found at the end. In 1997, the board began identifying resolutions by an identifier consisting of YYMMDD-###, where ### begins with the first 1997 resolution. The non-date portion of the identifer is included in the folder lists below.

Acquisition Information
Minutes books of the Board of Regents were transferred to the University Libraries in Sept. 2003 (accession UA2003-14). With receipt of the minute books, duplicate unbound minutes, 1960-1998, heretofore serving as the principal element of Archives 257, were discarded. In July 2017 four additional minutes volumes were transferred along with original resolutions (UA2017-06) and incorporated into this collection. At that point, sets of duplicate unbound minutes covering 1999-2006 (UA2000-06, UA2001-02, UA2002-09, UA2003-04, UA2004-11, UA2005-02, UA2006-02) were discarded. An additional print volume (2017-2018) and digital minutes and resolutions covering 2017 to early 2021 were received and incorporated on July 13, 2021 (UA2021-04). Another print volume (2019-2020), print copies of the 2017-2021 resolutions, the Personnel Commitee Minutes, and the six volumes of personnel transactions were received and added in March and July of 2022 (UA2022-01).
