Freeman (1837-1915) served with the Union army in the Civil War and was captured and held at Libby prison outside of Richmond, Virginia in September 1863. Along with other prisoners, he escaped twice and was able to rejoin the Union forces in February 1865. Freeman later served at Fort Phil Kearny and Fort Fetterman in Wyoming, the Sioux War of 1876, and in Cuba and the Philippines during the Spanish-American War. Freeman retired in 1901 at the rank of brigadier general to a ranch outside of Douglas, Wyoming. His daughter Julia was married to Robert D. Carey, a Wyoming governor and U.S. senator.
