Historical Note
Len (Leonard) Loring was a field representative for region 20 of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations. As the field respresentative he worked to organize unorganized workers in the service industry and prepared workers for strikes. He advocated for labor rights throughout Idaho. In 1948, he married Emilie Loring. Loring died April 21, 1991.
Emilie Loring was a lawyer and labor rights activist. While living in Chicago she organized, negotiated, and did educational work for the Textile Workers Union of America. She died in Missoula, Montana June 16, 2007.
Content Description
This collection contains journals, correspondence, reports, forms, and other materials relating to labor issues in Idaho, particularly dealing with unions in the hospitality industry. There are materials from the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), the Hotel Restaurant Employees and Bartenders International Union (HREBIU) Local 490, and the Idaho State Federation of Labor.
Many of the materials pertain to Len Loring's work in the planning and organization of workers to strike against business owners, particularly in Lewiston, Idaho, Twin Falls, Idaho, and the Boise, Idaho area.
There are also a few materials dealing with the Textile Workers' Union of America in Chicago, Illinois. These materials were created in through the work of Emilie Loring. Materials in this collection were created between 1947 to 1961.
