Historical Note

Anthropology courses at Washington State University originally fell under the department of Sociology, in the college of Arts and Sciences. In 1963, Anthropology became its own department. Through the years the department has had a number of homes on campus, from Commons Hall to Johnson Tower, and finally to the current building in College Hall, which was renovated in 1983 to house both the department and the Anthropology Research Lab (Center for Northwest Anthropology).

Content Description

The collection includes annual Anthropology department reports, and correspondence from both faculty and the chairman of the department. Also included in this collection are the departmental faculty meeting minutes running from 1974 to 1989 and the eight volumes of the Washington State Research newsletter.

Administrative Information

Arrangement

The collection was arranged at processing into three series plus a folder of annual reports. The correspondence series is further broken down into two subseries, which are arranged alphabetically and then by date. The newsletters are arranged chronologically.

Acquisition Information

Records from Washington State University’s Anthropology Department were received at the WSU Libraries’ Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections from Dr. Bill Lipe in June of 1990 and August of 1999 and retained as UA1990-21 and UA 1999-14. The accessions were combined and processed in June and July 2012.

Processing Note

This collection was processed in June and July 2012 by Katrina Burch.

Separated Materials

A significant amount of material was discarded during processing, primarily for privacy reasons.
