Biographical Note
Abe Brenner immigrated to the United States from Eastern Europe. He came to Seattle in 1902 and soon thereafter started his first Seattle bakery at 12th and Jackson. In 1925 he moved the bakery to 18th and Yesler and also started a delicatessen.
Following Abe Brenner's death, his children Charles (Dec. 17, 1919 - Feb. 14, 2012), Joe, Itsey, and Yetta opened Brenner Brothers Bakery in 1954 on Cherry Street. The bakery was ransacked in the race riots of 1967. Following several armed robberies, the family closed the Cherry Street store and reopened in Bellevue in the early 1970s. At the 1994 Bite of Seattle, the Brenner Brothers Bakery presented the world's largest bagel.
A former Garfield High School athlete, Charles (Charlie) Brenner served as a medic in World War II, taking part in the 1944 Normandy Invasion and the Battle of the Bulge.
