Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Artur Simon (1938-) is an ethnomusicologist from Wesermünde, Germany. During his academic career, he studied at the University of Göttingen, the University of Hamburg, and the Hamburg University of Music and Theater before completing a dissertation on Egyptian folk music. He served as head of the ethnomusicology department from 1972 to 2003 at the Ethnological Museum in Berlin where he also managed the phonogram archive. His research focused on popular and ritual music in North and West Africa and Indonesia.
