In the spring of 1937, The University of Montana-Missoula (then Montana State University) began planning an art exhibition as part of the celebration and dedication of the new Women's Club Art Building on campus. The people involved included then University President George Finley Simmons; George Yphantis, Chairman of the Department of Fine Arts; Lucia Mirrielees, professor of English; Robert W. Macbeth of Macbeth Arth Galleries, New York City; and Mrs. Ripley Hitchcock, a New York art critic. The building dedication was on October 5, 1937. The exhibition, open from October 5-19, 1937, included works by American masters such as John Singer Sargent, Mary Cassat, Rockwell Kent, and James McNeill Whistler.
The Women's Club Art Building remains on campus today. The Women's Club still holds part of the building while the portion that began as the Art Building has enjoyed a variety of uses including as a planetarium. Today the building is listed in the campus directory as the International Center.
