Historical NoteReturn to Top

In 1974, the state of Washington’s legislature authorized an Art in Public Places (AIPP) program, which required that ½ of 1% of building construction funds had to go to art. To deal with selecting and approving this art on campus, in 1975 Washington State University created a Building Arts Committee, which was comprised of faculty, staff, and students. The name was changed to Campus Arts Committee sometime between 1979 and 1988.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The collection contains contracts, correspondence, and background information relating to specific arts projects under the purview of the Campus Arts Committee from about 1999-2004. Additionally, the collection contains a small amount of materials relating to the daily operations of the committee, and documents relating to the development of WSU’s Museum of Art.

Arrangement

The materials are arranged in two small informal series, within which materials are arranged alphabetically by subject or name. The first series deals with general campus and committee projects and organizations; the second series deals with specific artists and art projects.

Acquisition Information

The materials were transferred to the Washington State University Libraries’ Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections on July 20, 2018, by Rachel (last name not recorded) of the WSU Provost’s Office. They were retained as accession UA2018-07. It is unclear who, within the Provost’s Office, originally collected these records.

Processing Note

These papers were separated out and processed by University Archivist Mark O’English in July of 2018.

Separated Materials

These records came in a transferal of Provost’s Office records. A variety of campus reports, unrelated to the arts committee, from that accession were retained as UA2018-07.

Related Materials

Records of the Building Arts Committee, 1974-1979, are held at WSU MASC as Archives 372.
