Historical NoteReturn to Top

The Young Naturalists' Society (1879-1905) was a hub of natural history work in the Northwest. The Society started in December 1879 when a group of young men with no formal education gathered to discuss their common interests. They collected an impressive cabinet of specimens and helped popularize science in Seattle by publishing newspaper articles, lectures, and public exhibits. The Young Naturalists' Society was the only source of science in the Northwest until the beginning of the twentieth century. The original membership included J.O. Young, P. Brooks Randolph, Charles L. Denny, and Edmond S. Meany.
