Biographical Note

Paul C. Pitzer was born on December 11, 1941 in Portland, Oregon. He received his B.S. degree from Portland State University in 1964, before becoming an English teacher with the United States Peace Corps at the at the Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi High School in Ahar, Azerbaijan, Iran, from 1966 to 1968. Pitzer returned to the Pacific Northwest where he received his M.A. in History from the University of Washington in 1969, and married Grace Carol Smith in 1971. Pitzer worked as a history teacher for Aloha High School in Beaverton, Oregon, from 1969 to 2000. During this time, he also received his Ph.D. in History from the University of Oregon in 1990 and published "Building the Skagit: A Century of Upper Skagit Valley History, 1870-1970 in 1978", and "Grand Coulee: Harnessing a Dream" with Washington State University Press in 1994.

Content Description

This collection contains the research and papers written by Paul Pitzer on the Grand Coulee Dam and Columbia Basin Project from 1990 to 1992. This includes his dissertation from the University of Oregon titled “Visions, Plans, and Realities: A History of the Columbia Basin Project,” copies of his manuscripts “Grand Coulee – The Struggle” and “Grand Coulee – The Dam,” and his bibliography on the manuscripts. The manuscripts are Parts I and II of a three part collection, but Part III, “Grand Coulee – The Irrigation,” was not included in the donation of this collection.
