Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Emmett Langdon Avery (1903-1970), professor of English at Washington State University, earned his B.A. from Franklin College in Indiana, and went on to earn an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. He joined the faculty at Washington State College in 1927 as an instructor in English, and retired as chair of the English Department in 1968.

Avery was a prolific scholar, and an expert in the history of London theater.

Avery Hall at Washington State University is named in his honor.

This collection of Emmett Avery's professional papers includes a large volume of notes, drafts, and page proofs related to his contributions to the publication The London Stage: A Critical Introduction. Avery was responsible for most of the work on Part 1, covering the period 1600 to 1700, and he edited Part 2, covering the period 1700-1729, and wrote the critical introduction. The collection also includes a small amount of correspondence, and journal articles authored by Avery.

Arrangement

This collection is arranged in two series: Series 1. Correspondence and published articles, 1934-1968; and Series 2. History of the London stage research and publication files, circa 1930s-1960s. Avery's research notes in Series 2 include a chronological sequence and an alphabetical sequence, as well as a large quantity of unlabeled material.

Acquisition Information

This collection was transferred to the Washington State University Libraries from the WSU English Department in 2013 (MS.2013.18).
