Historical NoteReturn to Top

The Chinook is the WSU yearbook, which was first published in 1899. It was produced by the Junior Class until 1926, when the Associated Students of the State College of Washington took control of publishing the yearbook. Since 1974 it has been the responsibility of Student Publishing / Student Media.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

This collection is comprised of 19 boxes of Washington State University images created for the Chinook yearbook, dating between 1955 and 1984. The materials consist primarily of black and white positive images with accompanying negatives, as well as two sheets of slides. The images, many of which were hand-labeled by the staff and student workers who originally created or worked with them, include (but are not limited to) athletics, university clubs and organizations, departments, events, buildings, and people.

Arrangement

The majority of the materials consist of sheets of black and white positive strips with their accompanying negatives. These were re-foldered and organized to create seven main series of images: Athletics, Campus, Clubs and Organizations, Departments, Events, People, and Students. An eighth series consists of spiral-bound books of negatives.

In most of the first seven series, materials are organized alphabetically by subject, and then chronologically within those subjects. However, that is reversed in the Clubs and Organizations series, with materials organized chronologically by year, and then by subject within each year. In box 6 of Clubs and Organizations, folders 10 through 13 are photographic print orders for individual WSU clubs, containing subject and date information.

The final series, Negative Books, consists of one box containing negative strips that came to the MASC in six spiral-bound books. These negative strips remain in their original books and their original order within folders in box 19, and the contents of each book, as given by original labeling found in the books, is listed in the container list below.

Acquisition Information

This collection was received as a number of individual accessions over the years. From Publications and Printing / the Publications Office, they came in as UA1985-51 (Chinook Photographs, 1981-1982, .5 linear feet), UA1985-02 (Photographs, 1950-1970, 1 linear foot), UA 1982-30 (Campus and Yearbook Photographs, 1978-1981, 3 linear feet received on Dec. 2, 1982 from Norm Nelson), UA1983-02 (Photographs, 1965-1970, 1 linear foot received on Jan. 25, 1983), UA1984-03 (Photographs, 1959-1980, 1 linear foot), UA1984-13 (Photographs, 1958-1962, .5 linear feet), UA1984-42 (Negatives and Contact Prints, 1960-1970, .1 linear feet), and UA1985-07 (Terrell Photographs, 1960-1970, .05 linear feet). From the Student Publications Office came UA 1984-10 (Chinook Photographs, 1983, .5 linear feet). These were all amalgamated into one accession, UPC 007, in April of 1999 by University Archivist Lawrence Stark.

Processing Note

This collection was processed by WSU student Kaitlyn Van Vleet between October 2019 and January 2020.

Related Materials

WSU MASC holds a number of series of photographs which document the campus and its students, taken either by Student Media and its predecessors, or by WSU’s Photo Services and its predecessors. Rather than listing them all here, we’d suggest looking at the list of the MASC’s photograph collections, as well as at the unprocessed collections (accessions).

MASC has a digital Evergreens collection, as well as a digital Chinooks collection. Each collection is complete, excepting a few Evergreen issues where no known copy still exists, from the first issue up to the point at which the individual collections stop.
