Content Description

A collection of interviews with key individuals involved in the jazz scene in Whatcom County, Washington. Interviews were conducted by Milton Krieger (author of the 2012 book "The less subdued excitement : a century of jazz in Bellingham and Whatcom County, Washington") and Elizabeth Joffrion (Director of Western Libraries Archives & Special Collections). Interviewees are Barb Fuller, Dave Keim, Jud Sherwood, Margaret Bikman, Paul Sorenson, Rick Whitaker and Robert (Bob) Storms.

Detailed Description of the Collection

  • Description: Rick Whitaker

    Multi-instrumentalist jazz musician, promoter of traditional jazz and longtime president of Bellingham Traditional Society. Whitaker discussed the management of a small market local jazz organization and its support for traditional jazz performance. Audio recording (mp3 file).

  • Description: Dave Keim interview

    Trombonist and member of the Count Basie legacy band for over 30 years while based in Bellingham. Keim iscussed his professional life with the Basie Band, including experiencing racism and other difficult conditions. Audio recording (mp3 file).

  • Description: Paul Sorenson interview

    Composer, arranger and musician. Sorensen attended the U. S. Navy School of Music, became a musician with the U.S. Navy Band, then worked as a professional musician out of Local 47 in Los Angeles from 1961 to 1977. Returning to Bellingham in 1977, he taught flute, clarinet, and saxophone at various venues, including WWU. Sorenson formed his own band, Northern Lights Jazz Orchestra, in 2000. Sorensen discussed his musical career, his arrangements of notable compositions, and his collaboration with several artists, including Frank Sinatra and Jonny Mathis.  Audio recording (mp3 file).

  • Description: Barb Fuller interview

    Jazz vocalist and former member of the female HoneyBees Quartet and publisher of Entertainment News Northwest 2006-2019.  The magazine received the Bellingham Mayor's Arts Award in 2014. Fuller discussed her work with the Honeybees, the history and importance of ENNW and the loss of entertainment news in the local community. Audio recording (mp3 file)

  • Description: Margaret Bikman interview

    Arts and music advocate, librarian, and Arts and Entertainment editor for the Bellingham Herald for 27 years.  Bikman discussed jazz and the community musical history, the demise of local journalism and its impact on the arts.  Audio recording (mp3 file).

  • Description: Jud Sherwood interview

    Professional drummer and founder of The Jazz Project.  The non-profit project sponsors music workshops for local schools, provides scholarships, music lessons and free instruments to low-income families.  The Jazz Project Medical Fund program assists musicians with emergency medical care.  Sherwood discussed the evolution of the Jazz Project, its programs and his work as a non-profit fundraiser, as well as the Northwest music scene.
