Biographical Note

Thomas Huston Macbride (1848-1934) was a botanist and the 10th President of the State University of Iowa, serving from 1914 to 1916. He had also worked on the campus for over 50 years as a professor and conservationist, and head of the Department of Botany from 1887 to 1893. He was the first president of the Iowa Park and Forestry Association, and he founded the Lakeside Laboratory at Lake Okoboji in northwest Iowa. Macbride married Harriet Diffenderfer on December 31, 1875, and they had four children. Later in life, he moved to Seattle, Washington where he died on March 27, 1934, at age 85. He was the father of Philip D. Macbride.
