Summary
This collection consists of handwritten stories for Catherine Para’s memoir entitled Just Call Me Grandma, a copy of the published manuscript, ephemera, newspaper clippings, several interviews with Catherine Para and her husband John Para, and a photograph of Catherine Para. She immigrated from Italy in the early 1900’s, settling with her husband in Othello, Washington.

Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Catherine Para was born in Gambasca, Italy on April 26, 1894, the third of six siblings. She and her husband, Giovanni (John) Para, married in April 1915, leaving 12 days later for Ellis Island. From there, they took the train to Connell, Washington, and eventually moved to Othello, Washington, where they farmed and raised their six children. Mrs. Para was active in the local community and passed away in 1991 at the age of 97.

This collection consists of handwritten stories for Catherine Para’s memoir entitled Just Call Me Grandma, a copy of the published manuscript, ephemera, newspaper clippings, several interviews with Catherine Para and her husband John Para, and a photograph of Catherine Para. She immigrated from Italy in the early 1900’s, settling with her husband in Othello, Washington. Ms. Para wrote down stories from memory in her later years and a family member assisted in arranging and publishing these as a memoir in 1979.

Alternative Forms Available

This collection includes two DVD discs containing interviews with Catherine and John Para. The contents were digitized and retained as MP4 video files. In addition, Kathleen Emry donated an MP3 digital file containing an interview with her grandparents. Digitized files are housed in MASC’s archival digital storage and available upon request.
