Historical Note

William T. Pettijohn (1907-1997) was a geologist and engineer who worked in South Africa and the United States. He began as sales engineer for New Hampshire-based Sullivan Machinery Company (1930-1931) before being employed in South Africa as a miner for the Rhokana Corporation (1931-1932), shift boss for the Consolidated Main Reef Mine (1932-1934), and shift boss, mine foreman, general foreman and mine superintendent for Mufulira Copper Mines in Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia) from 1934 to 1948. From 1948 he was connected with Pennsylvania-based New Jersey Zinc Company and became General Manager of Mines. In 1949, he was awarded a gold medal from the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy in London.

Content Description

The collection contains twenty subject files on the subject areas of mining costs and methodologies, mining companies, and Northern Rhodesia that include mostly printed material with some correspondence and notes (1929-1984); five mining-related periodicals (1953-1983); articles and reports by Pettijohn and others (1917-1978); pamphlets and other printed materials concerning mining (1930-1980); six photographs of people employed by the New Jersey Zinc Company; a map of Rhodesia (1932); a Northern Rhodesia Chamber of Mines Yearbook (1956); and a photocopy of a paper by William H. Calahan on mineral deposits in carbonate rocks (1964).
