Biographical Note

Elmer Chester Huntley, 1915-1994, served as Washington State Representative from the 9th District for five terms from 1956 to 1966. During that period he served as Chairman of the State Highway Commission. In 1966 he was elected to the State Senate and served there until 1972. During that time he was a member of the committees of Agriculture and Horticulture, Highways, Ways and Means (Appropriations), Higher Education and Libraries, and Commerce and Regulatory Agencies. In 1970 he was appointed to the National Highway Safety Advisory Committee by President Nixon. He was actively involved in local affairs, including being the Grand Master of Masons in Washington and Alaska.

Content Description

The papers of Washington State Senator Elmer C. Huntley consist of subject files, constituent correspondence, various reports, and enclosures, as well as personal financial papers. The majority of the papers are from Huntley's service in the State Senate, during the years 1966-1972, and include notices, contracts, letters, concerning the Washington State Highway Commission and other state highway departments. Materials related to the legislative terms prior to 1965 are in the first series; 1965 to 1967 in the second; 1967 to 1969 in the third; 1969 to 1971 the forth; and 1971 to 1973, plus a few government related papers dated after 1973, are in the fifth series. Series six consists of personal financial records.

The papers were donated to the Washington State University Libraries in 1971, 1972, 1973, 1982, 1989 and 1994 by Elmer Huntley.
