Biographical Note

Henry Portin was a professional news photographer. He was born on a farm in Ridgefield, Washington, and served in the Navy during WWII. In 1940, he briefly worked as a broadcaster at a tiny radio studio on the 21st floor of Seattle’s Smith Tower. The station later became part of KING Broadcasting. After WWII, he held radio-operator jobs with Pan-American Airways and TV engineering and broadcast jobs in Seattle and Tacoma. For KIRO and KTNT, he installed station wiring and mounted home antennas to test signals’ reach. He also shot news, sports, and political events, selling the film to stations that didn’t yet have large reporting teams.

In 1960, Portin set up his own firm - Henry Portin Productions - where he wrote, shot, edited, and mixed sound for many projects, including the Seattle World’s Fair. The company also produced film spots for the campaigns of President Richard Nixon, Washington Senator Warren G. Magnuson, and Governors Albert Rosellini and Dan Evans.

In the late 1970s, he sold the firm and worked with a cousin in Sweden and a manufacturer in Seattle to create a rubberized paving material using recycled tires. His running tracks were installed at Everett High School and at several colleges. He died in 2000.
