Content Description

This archival group contains reports, memoranda, charts, graphs, maps, photographs, and other material collected by or written by John E. Hayes, a Twin Falls hydraulic engineer, in connection with his survey of the Snake River. This study, which was financed by the Milner Corporation, representing the original Twin Falls Land and Water Company, "began in 1932 and for more than two years, Mr. Hayes devoted most of his time pursuing Snake River Waters above ground and under ground. His purpose was to determine sources of increment, conditions affecting losses as well as increment, fluctuation of supply and influences contributing to fluctuation; diversions from the river, manner and effect of utilization of water, conditions determining successful irrigation, etc. Mr. Hayes was convinced that much water was being wasted, too much water being applied to certain crops, needless seepage conditions developing and most important, there remained in Idaho thousands of acres of fertile land unused for lack of water that could be diverted from the Snake River." (Typed letter signed Anna H. (Mrs. John E.) Hayes to Siegfried B. Rolland, Department of History, University of Idaho, January 14, 1964.)

Administrative Information

Arrangement

Since the material in this group is almost exclusively concerned with the Snake River Water Survey, the physical nature of the material was the only basis for organization. Within each group material relating to one particular portion of the survey has been brought together.

Processing Note

The Descriptive Inventory of the Papers of John E. Hayes relating to a survey of Snake River waters in the University of Idaho Library was prepared by Judith Nielsen, March 1982.

In January 2007 the papers were rearranged to improve access. Apparently, materials could then only be retrieved by means of file cards. The new arrangement, however, presented inconsistencies, causing it to be revised again in November 2007. The revision included restoring Judith Nielsen's inventory order and adding box and folder numbers to it.
