Historical NoteReturn to Top
The Christian Friends for Racial Equality was a Seattle organization established in 1942 to promote interracial understanding. Its 17 charter members included Edith Steinmetz, who became the group’s historian. The multi-racial membership fought racial and religious discrimination through education and outreach, and sought to promote understanding through social acquaintance. Group activities included meetings, speakers, and social events. In 1967, the organization changed its name to Christians and Friends for Racial Equality.

Acquisition Information
The collection is a merger of two accessions. The first came from Allen R. Potter, a Seattle social worker who entrusted his papers to Chester Kingsbury, who in turn donated them on to the Libraries in 1989. The second accession was given by Ethelyn Hartwick to the Seattle Public Library, which transferred the materials in 2001.
Processing Note
The two accessions were merged and processed in 2002.
