Biographical Note
Raymond L. Givens (1884-1972) was a justice of the Idaho Supreme Court from 1925 to 1954. He also served one term in the Idaho legislature (1919).
Content Description
This collection consists of a research article and notes of Raymond L. Givens, plus six letters from J. Neilson Barry, all relating to the early exploration and mapping of the Boise Valley. Givens was particularly interested in the early names of the Boise River and its early designations as the Big Wood River and the Reid River. He studied maps and explorers' accounts, chiefly from the pre-settlement (pre-1863) era.
Justice Givens' research article was published in three installments of the Idaho Statesman. The collection contains the typescript of Givens' article and the newspaper clippings (in photocopy form) from its printing in the Statesman.
