Historical NoteReturn to Top

Ruth Hopson Keen (1906-1998) was a naturalist who studied the Collier Glacier, an educator and Geology professor, an author, and the first female to become a (Park) Ranger Naturalist at Crater Lake National Park.

While Keen was a high school teacher in Eugene, Oregon, she was asked by Dr. Francois Matthes of the U.S. Geological Survey to study the Collier Glacier. She compiled a twenty-six-year photographic record (1936-1962) of its changes, the longest sustained research effort of the glacier to date. Keen completed her Ph.D. in Geology in 1946, at the University of Oregon, and taught continuing education classes.

In 1950, Ruth Hopson Keen became the first woman to fill the role of (Park) Ranger Naturalist at Crater Lake National Park.
