Historical NoteReturn to Top
David S. Fine was a construction engineer whose achievements over a 44-year period included some of New York City’s most famous bridges and buildings. His career was dominated by his long service with the American Bridge Division of U.S. Steel. Projects he supervised included the hingeless arch of the Henry Hudson Bridge over the Harlem River, the Marine Parkway Bridge, the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge, the Tappan Zee Bridge, and the cables for the Triborough Bridge. In terms of buildings, he supervised work on the Secretariat Building and Assembly Hall at the United Nations, and on the Perisphere, Trylon and other buildings at the 1939 New York World’s Fair. Other buildings he had a major role included the Union Carbide, Equitable Life, Socony Mobil, First National City and the Empire State building. He also played a significant role in labor relations with unions in the steel construction trade.
